It is not a trip to Maui without a visit to Makawao.
Makawao is a cowboy town turned artist’s mecca. It grew up as the home of Maui cowboys, back in the 19th century when cattle ranching was really big on Maui. Every Fourth of July the town still holds its famous rodeo – 2017 will be its 61st year! But Makawao is now equally as famous for the galleries and artists that call it home.
Possibly our favorite gallery on the whole island is the Maui Hands in Makawao, where the only art sold is that of Hawaiian artists. Strike up a conversation with the staff, and they can tell you amazing stories about the artists they feature.
And for home decor, it’s hard to beat Designing Wahine. I find my inner zen the minute I walk through their door. We’ve found gorgeous starfish coffee mugs and Maka Sea linens for the condo there…
If you’re a sushi lover, you owe it to yourself to stop in to Makawao Sushi and Deli. Don’t let the decidedly plain exterior fool you – the sushi here is some of the best on the island. When the owners of Gannons and Haliimaile General Store throw a party, they’ve been known to have Makawao Sushi cater for them!
For a fun change of pace from the Maui beach thing, Makawao’s pretty hard to beat.
